After prolonged abstinence Basel-I dared no longer a functioning IBM Thinkpad 600x. Before the "repair" the Thinkpad was a prompt for an unknown supervisor password and acknowledges each command with an error screen that pointed to the manual, which counseled for this situation a service to stay with IBM.
A little research on the net showed that the required password is not encrypted and can be reset in a built-on the system board I2C EEPROM (AT24CT08 name) is stored. To this situation

I chose the first option, since I had found on ebay a provider of "fresh" I EEPROMs. Two days after the order arrived the object of desire: an SMD component on the size of about 3 x 5 mm with 16 pins in the sub-millimeter spacing.

is the hard part of the operation, however, the replacement of the component itself, as the old EEPROM are first removed. I think that I damaged on this occasion the board, as it is almost impossible without SMD equipment to heat all the pins of the chips equally to the component from the board to separate. I lack the appropriate equipment with a watchmaker's screwdriver and levered processed while the 35W roasting the legs. The new chip is soldered in principle not difficult, but we must not use too much solder as this love between the tight-fitting connections and flows of the component after short circuits produced.
