The icons on the desktop may either be icons for existing files with desktop location, as also be links to files that are stored elsewhere on the PC.
A link can be seen in most cases on the small arrow on the bottom left icon
links can be safely deleted - the original file is retained. The path to the original file is displayed under "target" . Open this, right-click (RMT) context menu and click Properties
If you want to delete to remove the icon of an original file from the desktop, not the file but from the PC, you can after opening the Windows Explorer (Windows key + E), for example, with RMB on the functions Cut and Paste this file to another location.
Some Icons on the desktop can be deleted or moved, such as the "trash".
standard icons such as My Computer, My Documents, etc can be removed from the context menu with RMB on the desktop surface. ("Customize Desktop" Properties> Desktop tab>)
