HTML mail is evil and therefore makes any reasonable person be mail program so that it only sends text messages. Sometimes you have to but sometimes send HTML mail, for example, if you must write a table or include a picture. This is very easy in Thunderbird, which you do a shift-click (hold the click button and large-Mach) on the compose button.
